Welcome by the Chair of ASCE-ICVRAM-ISUMA 2014

ASCE-ICVRAM-ISUMA 2014 Chair: Michael Beer

A very warm welcome to the second International Conference on Vulnerability and Risk Analysis and Management (ICVRAM) and the sixth International Symposium on Uncertainty Modeling and Analysis (ISUMA). We hope you find an all-round inspiring environment in the conference and the location.

In the conference we have put particular emphasis on multi-disciplinary developments to address the demands and challenges that evolve from the quickly growing complexity of our real-world problems and the associated uncertainties and risks. The organizers of the Mini Symposia, the ASCE CDRM Advisory Committee, and the Local Organizing Committee have realized this broad thematic coverage embedded in the organizational environment of our Institute for Risk and Uncertainty spanning ten disciplines.

We are very much looking forward to a vivid exchange of ideas in this environment. We also invite you to enjoy the rich and diverse culture of the city of Liverpool to balance the technical aspects of the conference.

Welcome by the Chair of ASCE-CDRM

ASCE CDRM Chair: Yumei Wang

The Council on Disaster Risk Management (CDRM) of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) is again proud to co-host this important conference. We hope it will be an exciting venue for intellectual growth on risk and uncertainty, informed decision making, resilience sciences, and more. Whether your interests relate to structures (e.g., taller buildings, smarter grids, greener cities, faster trains, bigger dams, or longer bridges); environments (e.g., undersea, space, nano-space, or industrial); research; teaching; or practice — we hope you will benefit from the conference.

With ever-growing human populations and urbanization, expanding and aging infrastructure, and the consequent worsening of many disasters, engineers are challenged more than ever to better quantify risk and to devise effective resilience solutions. Tomorrow's demands will be even more complex and challenging. How much risk can we tolerate from extreme events and still provide an adequate safety net for communities? How might the many risks best be quantified? What improvements are worthwhile, sustainable, durable, cost-effective and feasible?

I encourage you to have fun discussing emerging ideas, collaborating on creative innovations, improving education on risk science, and helping bridge research and theory into practice. Enjoy the conference and the upcoming published conference proceedings!
